The Pros and Cons of Television
When television began, its main objective was to present the news to society. Over the years this goal has changed, and now we can find all kinds of programs withdifferent purposes. There are many different forms of entertainment, cultural news, and daily news which reach an incalculable amount of viewers. Television is watched by most people. It does notdiscriminate between social class, economic class, or age. It has spread throughout all areas of society because of its ability to simultaneously integrate images and voices, and because it has differentcontent from other media. However, TV also has a problematic influence on people. In most cases, children and younger viewers lack guidance in relation to developing themes, such as sex, alcohol, drugsand violence. The young are great imitators even during their first months of life, as infants can imitate facial expressions. They learn to eat, dress, use the toilet and interact with others throughconstant attention from their parents or other adults. With the proper guidance, children can learn to use television in healthy way, and they can learn important values such as cooperation,coexistence and being kind to others.
Television is the most accessible media for children, since it’s present in most houses and does not require any complex abilities to receive information. However,children often see violence on TV in programs such as action movies and cartoons, which can consciously or unconsciously damage them. The indiscriminate exposure of children to this sort of media canstimulate inappropriate behaviors, such as violence or inappropriate language, because at their early age they are unable to clearly distinguish between what is real and what is wrong or right. Children canbecome confused into believing things that do not really exist, and into accepting inappropriate behaviors.
