Ethnocentrism. Negatively judging aspects of another culture by the standards of one’s own culture. To be ethnocentric is to believe in the superiority of one’s culture. Everything in a culture is consistent to that culture and makes sense if you understand that culture. In contrast to the term ethnocentrism, cultural relativismrefers to the view that an individual beliefs and behaviors should only be understood in terms of that person’s own culture (Jandt 83-85.) Although I analyze the entire film, pausing and rewinding, I had difficulties to find a good verbally example to describe the concept. But I found the following scene, where Jean Cabot is talking with her friend by phone, she was angry and upset, she said, “Yes!At them, the police, at Rick, at Maria, at the dry cleaners who destroyed my blouse today, at the gardener who keeps over-watering the lawn.” I had a deep analyze to the dialogue, and background, I found a relation with the concept. Jean feels superior to the rest of the people how aren’t white because she is white and wealthy. She feels that nobody can do right their jobs. She is angry witheverybody thinking if that all the people were white, she wouldn’t have that frustration. In contrast of ethnocentrism is cultural relativism. In the next scene, where Anthony is talking with his buddy after having dinner, he said, “We’re black and black people don’t tip. So she wasn’t gonna waste her time.” Here both black males describes their own culture by affirming that they don’t tip, and theyonly understand about that, and not necessary care about other races to understand. These concepts where an essential part of the film, where the characters didn’t want to open their perspectives, and becoming deep in there own thoughts.
Stereotype. Is a natural human survival mechanism that is a generalization based on limited information, limited interaction, and limited experience with aperson, group, or situation. Many times stereotypes of people are negative or positive conceptions or images that are resorted to because of convenience (Chuang and Fong 43.) In the scene where Ria and Graham are having sexual encounter, Ria said, “How about a geography lesson! My father’s from Puerto Rico. My mother’s from El Salvador. Neither one of those is Mexico.” While Graham responds, “Well, then I guess the big mystery is who gathered all those remarkably different cultures together and taught them all how to park their cars on their lawns?” Graham thought because she has brown skin and speaks Spanish, she is Mexican, making a stereotype by assuming all Mexicans look and act like that. Not realizing that there are many countries in Latin America that speak Spanish and have differentculture and traditions. This was a very common concept among the film, and strong barrier to races integrate equally in this big city.
Prejudice. Refers to the irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, religion, or sexual orientation (Jandt 85.) In the scene where Anthony is talking with a white guy in his job, the white guy said, “(Blacks) they just can’t keep their hands outof the counter jar. Fucking black people, huh?” This dialogue explains how the white guy is hatred the black community in a derogatory way; assuming that all black people have bad behaviors. In a verbal and nonverbal this concept was present in the entire film, being a barrier especially between whites and blacks, given irrational comments and acts against each one.
Attitude. Is a favorable orunfavorable predisposition toward a person, thing, or an idea. The functional approach further carries an attitude of openness, acceptance, and trust. The dysfunctional approach leads to an attitude of suspicion, fear, ethnocentrism, and prejudice (Chuang and Fong 13-14.) In the scene where John and Shaniqua are discussing about John’s fathers health plan, he yell, “I can’t look at you without...
