Toni Morrison (1931) comes from a family whose ancestors were descendants of slaves from the period before the Civil War. Born in Loraine, Ohio (USA), Chloe Anthony Wofford-this ishis real name-secondary education ended in high school in his hometown in 1949 and studied at Howard University in Washington where, four years later, graduated majoring in EnglishStudies in Classics secondary academic. She continued her studies at Cornell University where she completed a postgraduate course in English Literature. Then, she began to write fiction,taught English at universities in Texas and Howard for several years until she became an editor at Random House in New York in 1967. In 1970, she published his promising first novel,"The Bluest Eye" (Blue Eyes), which was followed by "Sula" in 1973 and "Song of Solomon" (Song of Solomon) in 1977, critically acclaimed as a great literary event. "Tar baby" (The Islandof the Knights) in 1981 also received an excellent reception, but the consecration in 1987 come from the hand of "Beloved" (Beloved) for which she received the Pulitzer Prize. Thencame "Jazz" and the trials of "Playing in the Dark" (Playing in the dark), both in 1992, two major bestsellers. The following year she won the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming thefirst black woman to receive this distinction. The life of the black community, especially women, portrayed through her great powers of observation and the use of a remarkable poeticlanguage, also appeared in her following works: "Paradise" (Paradise), "Love" (Love) and "Mercy" (a blessing), her last novel to date. She has also published children's books, plays, andnumerous articles and essays. To talk about her latest novel, the aforementioned "A blessing"-in which revisits the issue of slavery and challenges the myth of the American dream.
