Who’s Missing?

Ask yourself this question each time you walk in to a setting full of people (e.g.,restaurant, classroom, dining hall, bus, metro, worship service):
Who is not here and why not?

For this assignment pick one of those settings where you thought about the question.

Then, chooseone category from the four below on which you want to elaborate. Your choices below are gender, ethnic groups, disabilities, and socioeconomic status. Give specific details to illustrate yourobservations about one of these four.

A. Socioeconomic status (SES)

1. Can you tell anything about the socioeconomic status of thepeople? Who’s missing?

Metro shuttles are often used by people who have higher economic backgrounds. This is because most of the times people with higher income are able to own a car and have othertype of safer transportation.

2. Is their absence a problem? Why or why not? (Consider, for example, if homogeneity of the group is serving a purpose.)

Their absence is not a problembecause there are still other people who use the metro. There is no racist purpose for the people who don’t use the metro. It is just a matter of choices. Therefore, the absence of people who come fromhigher economic statuses is not a problem for the metro shuttles.
