Introduction

The sentences form the basis of the grammar system; learning the basic structures and functions within core sentences will let you know how the English language is structured and organized. Building sentences and taking the sentences apart for analysis, a process called parsing is the book’s main concern.

Then, sentences are analyzed into constituents. The main constituents ofsentences are going to be noun phrase and verb phrase, in their correspondent subject and predicate functions. The recommendation is to consider grammar as a system. What is expected of you is that you understand how separate parts gather to form larger units and so see how grammar works.

The components of the main verb, the verb phrase that contains categories like tense, mood and aspect, related to as the status of the verb, issues found in the third chapter. Also, the constituents that make up tense, modality and aspect, modal verbs, auxiliary markers have and be past participle forms and present participle forms.

Identifying Verb Types

The language system that puts words together in meaningful units is known as Grammar. The meaningful units aresentences, which are considered the basic building blocks of the language. The verb is the heart, the main part of any sentence. In English, six core verb types can be recognized: intransitive, linking, transitive, Vg., Vc., and Be. Verbs classification is made regarding the structures that immediately follow them. The verb and its subject, and the slots associated with it, form a sentence nucleus. Eachslot accomplishes a function (or more) and the function is defined by the way a structure relates to a verb.

Analyzing Sentences

Sentences are divided into two big parts: noun phrases (subjects) and verb phrases (predicates). Sentence parts may be either structure if reference is made to the classes they fall into; or functions when the reference is to the relationships they maintain withother sentence parts. In the textbook, sentences will be analyzed into phrase structure diagrams (tree-diagrams). It is neither the unique nor the most important way to analyze sentences, because what is required is the use of your skill to identify sentence parts and ability to label them as structures and functions. Diagrams help you visualize the analysis of a sentence; they are not the aim ofthe course.

The grammar system we are dealing with finds the concept of constituents. A constituent is the association of words that function together as single units. Among the sentence constituents are nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs; they appear as single words, phrases, or clauses. Constituents are constructed as hierarchies; phrases move around heads that cluster other words namedattributes.

Expanding Verb Phrases

The concept of main verb needs the word called verb, present in its tense, modality and aspect. These three grammatical categories constitute pointers of the status of the verb. Tense in English has two forms, present and past. Only the first word in the main verb is determined by the physical shape known as tense; the rest of words in the main verb will takeother forms, different principal parts.

Modality (or mood) has to do with the purpose of the sentence: it makes a statement, asks a question, gives an order, or indicates possibility. Modality is noticed in the change of the form of the sentence. Conditional mood refers to possibility or probability; therefore it is formed by the addition of a modal auxiliary (or helping verb) to the verbphrase.

Aspect indicates if the action of the verb is complete or is ongoing; therefore, it occurs in two forms, perfect or progressive.

Most verbs in English are regular: they have a particular way to form their past tense, by the addition of -d or -ed. These forms are repeated in their past participle forms.

Finally, verbs have five principal parts: base (infinitive), present tense, past...
