AGAINST VYGOTSKY

Piaget saw cognitive development from a biological perspective and believed that intelligence stems from a human ability to adapt and organize. He believed that children interpretthe world and organize ideas through mental schemas that allow them to make sense of the environment. Learning is the assimilation of new information and skills into out pre-developed schema.Contrast this with Vygotsky, children transform and internalize information about the world with language. For Vygotsky, social interaction is the major impulse for development. When a child hears language,it imitates it until it becomes internalized and is represented in the mind as internal speech.

Piaget believed that development precedes learning: a child starts from a self-centred position andstarts developing by his own agreement, moving from itself into the social interaction. However, Vygotsky believed that development begins with socialization and language acquisition that leads todevelopmental learning.

Piaget used a stage model of development to show the connection between a child's biological and cognitive development. He believed that brain growth is related to chronologicaldevelopment, underscoring the connection with biology. Nevertheless, Vygotsky's believed that language and culture are inside development. He proposed that children construct their knowledge out ofsocial interactions, and that learning promotes development. Language is the best way of social learning and development.

Piaget promotes learning by exploration or discovery, Vygotsky promotescollaborative learning.
