Per a parlar de manipulació de medis, primer hem de fer referència a certs personatges i articles clau per a comprendre la força que ha tingut aquest tema els darrers anys.
Robert McChesney a Rich media, poor democracy (1999) planteja una qüestió essencial per l'anàlisi del rol dels medis a la nostra societat:

<<But this is not necessarily so. In fact, the nature of the U.S. media system is the result of a series of political decisions, not natural law or holy mandate. Even when media are regulated preponderantly by markets, it remains, in the end, a political decision to turnthem over to a relative handful of individuals and corporations to maximize profit. The U.S. media system of the late twentieth century looks substantially different from the media system of the late nineteenth century, and it is diametrically opposed to the press system of the Republic's first two generations. All modern U.S. media (including the advertising industry) are affected directly andindirectly by government policies, regulation, and subsidies. Specifically, the development of radio and television broadcasting has been and remains the province of the political system. At any time the American people might have chosen to establish a truly nonprofit and noncommercial radio and television system; they have always had the constitutional right to do so.
What is most notable aboutmedia policy making in the United States is not that it is important and that it exists, but, rather, that virtually the entire American population has no idea that it exists and that they have a right to participate in it. In I934, for example, there was considerable opposition to corporate commercial domination of radio broadcasting, but those who led the opposition had barely any influence onlegislative or regulatory issues in Washington. In fact, the striking feature of U.S. media policy making is how singularly undemocratic it has been-and remains. Crucial decisions are made by the few for the few behind closed doors. Public participation has been minuscule, virtually nonexistent.>>
El que vol remarcar en aquestes línees és el fet de que un grup reduit d'empreses de comunicaciódominades pels sectors polítics i sobretot econòmics dominin a escala mundial el mercat de les telecomuniacions, té com a conseqüència la reducció de varietat ideològica i la disminució de la capacitat de participació a la gestió pública de la població.
Per altra banda un altre autor que defensava aquesta idea de manipulació dels medis era Herbert Schiller, el qual tenia la teoria de que elsmedis tendien a abandonar les seves funcions naturals (com son la crítica, la expressió plural i exercir de contrapès i contrapoder plural) en un sistema democràtic i que passaven a ser extensions del poder polític i econòmic inevitablement. Una constant en els discursos de Schiller era la denuncia de l'avenç de les empreses privades en el domini del espai públic, ja que això afectava indirectament ala llibertat d'expressió.
<<Quan els directius dels medis de comunicació produeixen deliberadament missatges que no concorden amb elements reals de l'existència social, es converteixen en manipuladors de cervells. Els missatges que generen intencionadament una imatge falsa de la realitat i que produeixen una consciència que no pot captar les condicions reals de vida, personatges o socials,són missatges de manipulació.>>
Com veiem en aquest fragment extret del assaig The Mind Managers (1973), l'anàlisi que feia Schiller de la seva època sona tan actual i reflexa una situació mediàtica tan semblant a l'actual, que podria fer referència al mode en el que s'ha cobert informativament algun dels events més significatius de l'actualitat.
