My own experience of academic writing in High School
According to my past experience of academic writing in High School I can say that theknowledge I acquired was quiet poor and basic due to that I always felt a limit inside my mind that avoided my learning process to keep a real progress.
This limited learning it was a problem to meand to my understanding, especially in the English subject, because, in High School the teacher taught me how to write just short descriptions and some basics mechanics of writing whereas in Spanishwhere I made more elaborated writings. So this gave me an idea of how to write a text in English with the proper format or similar, at least.
That it was good value for me, the mechanics of writingand the knowledge given by the Spanish teacher helped me to write regularly in English.
But despite that Spanish helped me to improve my English writing; I always thought, and even think, that theEnglish teacher could have used some kind of method to correct us and being stricter on grammar, to keep our writing getting better every lesson. But if this had been so, I could have lost the realpurpose of writing; I could have changed my mind about writing for enjoyment rather than writing for a great mark. As Hartwell says (Errors and Expectations) on the extract of Dana Ferris (Second Languagewriting research and written corrective feedback in SLA), those who have a composition instruction makes the grammar issue uninteresting, which is a rigid way to teach writing.
The mechanics ofwriting should be comfortable than strict for the students and should have empirical guidance, before thinking of grammatical correction.
As for me, I felt secured and relaxed at the moment of writing bymyself, without pressure from the teacher correction.
Another issue I think is very important is the ability of communicate properly. This topic is mentioned on the extract of Wendell Johnson...
