Hurricane Katrina impacted the Gulf Coast with devastating force at daybreak on Aug. 29, 2005, hitting a region that included the fabled city of New Orleans andheaping damage on neighboring Mississippi. In all, more than 1,700 people were killed and hundreds of thousands of others displaced. Weather reporters said the hurricane’s storm surge —a 29-foot wall of water pushed ashore when the hurricane struck the Gulf Coast — was the highest ever measured in the United States.
From the Gulf States (principally Louisiana andMississippi), the officials said the loss of life was unknown but will likely reach well into the hundreds and possibly higher. It is clearly one of the most devastating naturaldisasters in recent US history. From Katrina's first landfall in Florida, while it was category 1, initial estimates suggest 11 deaths resulted.
Experts said Katrina is the costliesthurricane in U.S. history; this is especially cause for concern in a country like United States which receives these hurricanes periodically. The expected damage is said to be $100billion, but the loss of human life is the major cause for concern. The casino industry and tourism are also expected to take a beating. The actual damage done by Hurricane Katrina can onlybe verified after a full-scale disaster research is done.
In the wake of the storm, corruption and political ineptitude were exposed along with the inadequacies of federal, stateand local agencies. Gradually, the region was stabilized and its residents returned.
