DNA and Reproduction
WHEN:

WHAT:
Chapter 4 in yourtext book. We studied section 1 in detail. In Section 2, we only covered pages 106 and 107. In section 3, we covered pages 112 – 114.
HOW:
Please review chapter 4 in your text book. You have severalworksheets to review: “Overview of Cell Reproduction”, “Making an Identical Cell”, K.I.M Notes, DNA Review, “Asexual Reproduction”. You may use your photo story from ICT. On Edline there are manylinks to videos that provide a helpful review of material.
Main vocabulary to know:
DNA – deoxyribonucleic acid- contains hereditary material and carries genetic information.
Chromosome- an x likestructure of nucleic acids and proteins that contains DNA. Two chromatids together.
Chromatid- one of the two that form a chromosome.
Centromere- the center of the chromosome that is attached to thespindle fiber during cell division.
Gene- a unit of heredity that is transferred from parent to offspring.
Asexual reproduction- mode of reproduction by which offspring comes from only one parent andgetting genetic material only from one.
Sexual reproduction- creation of an organism combining genetic material from two organisms.
Mitosis- cell process of splitting in half and creating a newcell.
Budding- another form of asexual reproduction in which a new organism grows out of another one.
Regeneration- procces of renewal, restoration, and growth that makes any organism pliable tosomething that causes disturbance or damage.
Sperm- male reproductive cells with flagella to help itself to move.
Egg- an organic vessel in which the embryo begins to develop.
Fertilization- to developa new individual by introducing male reproductive material.
Zygote- cell resulting from the sperm and egg.
Diploid- two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
