How to recognize a literary text

When we see the word “literature” in the title of a book we wonder what does it means? The meaning looks obvious and we use the word “literary text” in ourcolloquial language. But then, when our teacher asks why a text is literary or how to recognize a literary text we do not have the answers. The meaning of this word seems to be more complex to us. Thosedoubts and questions that come out are the way to rich our own meaning of what a literary text is. In this essay we are going to learn through several examples how to recognize a literary text.
Literarytexts differ from other, first, by the communicative intention, predominantly aesthetic; these texts constitute a manifestation of human activity in which the author expresses a personal view byusing linguistic resources. They create a fictional world through a mimetic process, that is, the imitation of reality. Regardless of the degree of approximation of reality evoked, the world created inthe literary text is always imaginary. In the process of creation, literary texts are adjusted to specific models, which determine the genre to which they belong: thus, a literary work can be ascribedto the lyric, narrative or dramatic genre. In addition, literary texts can take the form of prose or verse.
In the novel “El Viejo y el Mar” written by Ernest Hemingway, we can find somecharacteristics that make it literary. This text expresses feelings that remind us of our own loneliness and quest for survival. Besides that, this novel contains literary resources like the personification thatgives human qualities to animals or objects. For example: “¿Qué edad tienes? –preguntó el viejo al pájaro-. ¿Es éste tu primer viaje?. Here, the author is giving to birds human characteristics. We canalso find the hyperbole which is a figure of speech involving exaggeration. For example: “Y se dió cuenta de que todo el mundo estaba acostado”. In this example the author is making an exaggeration...
