Animal Farm Utopia
George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, allegorizes the development of Soviet communism and the rise of power of the dictator Joseph Stalin. In the novel, the overthrowof the farm animal’s oppressor, Mr. Jones, by a democratic union of the farm animals; quickly gives way to the authority of power among the pigs. Like the soviet leaders, the pigs establish themselvesas the ruling class in their society. The expulsion of Mr. Jones from the farm creates a new demand for power, which in time became established as a society with totalitarian control by the rule ofthe pigs. The division between intellectual and physical labor begins to be expressed as the brainworkers, the pigs, use their knowledge as well as forms of propaganda to manipulate their society fortheir benefit. This type of environment results in a dystopian yet capitalist society. If Animal farm were to be a utopia, there would be the following modifications: there would be a counsel of animalseach containing one representative for each species on the farm, each group of animals would grow their own food, and trade with the outside world would exist if all animals agree.
Thecouncil of animals would consist of one representative from each species of animal on the farm. This selected group of animals is considered just as equal as every animal in society. They must be ableto communicate with one another including members of their own species as well as the outside world. These animals will present ideas, elections, and trading opportunities with the rest of theirsociety. Each decision will be elected amongst the community as well as the council. In order for a decision to be passed, everyone must be in favor of this choice. If anyone opposes the decision,negotiations will be made until everyone is satisfied with the outcome.
