Antoine Laurent Levosier

Antoine Levosier was a French nobleman prominent in the historiesof chemistryand biology. He found and termed oxygen and hydrogen, helped construct the metric system, put together the first extensive list of elements, and helped to reform chemical nomenclature. He was alsothe first to establish that sulfur was an element rather than a compound. He discover the law of conservation of matter (although matter may change its form or shape, its mass always remains the same).Antoine Laurent Lavoisier inherited a large fortune at the age of five with the passing of his mother. He was educated at the Collège des Quatre-Nations from 1754 to 1761,studying chemistry, botany, astronomy, and mathematics. As a student, he stated "I am young and avid for glory”. His father expected him to obtain his license to practice law in 1764 before turning into a scientist.  He won aprize on lighting the streets of Paris, and designed a new method for preparing saltpeter. He married a young, beautiful 13 years old girl named Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze, the daughter of a co-ownerof the Ferme générale, she translated from English for him and illustrated his books.
Lavoisier's fundamental contributions to chemistry were a result of a conscious effort to fit all experimentsinto the framework of a single theory. He established the consistent use of the chemical balance, used oxygen to overthrow the phlogiston theory, and developed a new system of chemical nomenclaturewhich held that oxygen was an essential constituent of all acids (which later turned out to be erroneous). He also introduced the possibility ofallotropy in chemical elements when he discoveredthat diamond is acrystalline form of carbon.
