Comparative Essay.
We decided to compare two different architects such as Maurice Sully and Jean Chalgrin. We think that both architects made an amazing effort to build such impressive monuments;these are some of the most emblematic structures of France. It requires quality and imagination. Maurice Sully and Jean Chalgrin are both contemporary architects, we can see in the “Arc de Triomphe”many details that are completely neoclassical architecture. It stands in the center of the Charles de Gaulle square, commissioned by Napoleon after the victory in Austerlitz it has the names ofevery general that fought in the French evolution inscribes and the tomb of the unknown soldier. We have many reliefs in the monument. We can appreciate six important battles of Napoleon and symbols ofFrances such as the Marseillaise, the Triomphe the Resistance and the Peace. We can compare it with the cathedral of Notre Dame made by Maurice Sully.

In the cathedral, there is a romantic stylebut there are some differences between them. The cathedral has a little bit of gothic style; it has a big rosette in the big part of the cathedral. At the very top we can observe gargoyles thatrepresent the guardian of the cathedral, it was believed that this figures protect the temple. And in the “Arc de Triomphe” it represents the battles won by Napoleon.

We can consider Notre Dame asneoclassical. But it is very unreasonable because neoclassicism began at the half of XVIII century, and Notre Dame is a totally gothic structure, which means that it was built on the XIII century.

Itis neoclassical because Notre Dame was almost destroyed during the French revolution, and it wasn´t until the XIX century that Violet le Duc decided to restore it, and he tried to rebuild it withthe gothic characteristics that the original one had, but unconsciously he added some neoclassical characteristics because his way of work was very influenced by that style which predominated on that...
