INTRODUCTION.
Most scholars now believe that the legendary city of Atlantis did in fact exist. Not as the mystical city with walls of gold and superhuman citizens, but as an ancienttown, on the island of Thera, that was part of the civilization we call the Minoans. The island of Thera is formed by a volcano that juts from the Mediterranean sea. It still exists today, thoughtransformed by many volcanic eruptions. It was one of these eruptions that destroyed an ancient city on the island of Thera in the Mediterranean that is believed to have been the origin of the myth ofAtlantis.
The legend of Atlantis was first told to us by the Greek philosopher Plato. It is thought that he heard of it by way of an Egyptian priestess. Plato describes a wealthy city with golden walls,elaborate architecture, an invincible army and enlightened citizens that were more advanced than any of their time.
THE LEGEND.
Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher from whom we learn the legendof Atlantis. He writes of it in two books, Timaeus and Critias. It is speculated that he heard the story from relatives who were friends of a Greek politician named Solon. It was Solon who hadvisited Egypt and heard it there from a priestess.
According to Plato, Atlantis was first founded by a mix of gods and mortals. The god Poseidon married the mortal woman Cleito and she gave birth to fivesons and founded Atlantis. The people of Atlantis were sort of a superhuman race. They were very enlightened and advanced. Their military was invincible and they conquered all the lands around them.
