Battle Of Marathon
In 490 B.C, A large Persian army of almost 20000 foot soldiers and cavalry crossed the Aegean sea to invade Greece. The fate of the vastlyoutnumbered Greek army depended on one man and his legs his name was phidipidies. Out of this day in history, not only Greece stayed being Greek and not Persian. An Olympic game was founded. The Marathon.Today we have Greece and the marathon thanks to him.
5000 Athenian helot warrior were under the rule of general milities, they faced a 4 times bigger Persian army that landed just outside ofAthens in the plain of marathon. At the end of the first attacked 6400 Persian soldiers lay ed slaughtered in the field. When only 195 Greeks died. Even though the Greek victory. the Greeks needed timeto re assemble there army. the Persians moved south to attack the city. Athens needed help from Sparta.
The Greeks were not going to be able to manege the Persians alone so the called theSpartans. Time was an issue and Sparta was 140 miles away. General Milities called Phidipidies, a professional runner to run to Sparta an d ask for help. Phidipidies took 36 hrs get to Sparta. Sparta agreedto help with the condition that they would not hit the field until the full moon due to religious festivals. Phidipidies ran back to marathon again and joined the fight.
After several confronts,the Spartans finally came to the battlefield. The Persians were defeated and the Greeks were victorious. After a fierce fighting, Phidipidies was once again called by his general. This time he had torun back to Athens to announce the Greek victory. Only 26 miles away . When he got there and announced there victory, due to all the effort on his first run, the several battles and his last run. Hedied of exhaustion.
Thanks to that, today we have the marathon. Hundreds of years later the marathon was established as an Olympic event. All because of the effort of one man who fought and died...
