The Chosen – Book Report

-The Title of the book and the author:The Chosen

-The type of book: fiction – drama – religion (Judaism)

-Where it takes place: It takes place in the mid-Twentieth Century, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City

-The CentralCharacters:

There are two main characters in the story which are two Jewish teenager boys which the difference between them is that one of them is strictly orthodox and the other one is alsoreligious but not as such, we can introduce them as:

Reuven (Robert or Bobby) Malter: a Modern Orthodox Jew, and a teenage boy. He is smart, popular in his community, and has a head for mathematics. Hisfather wants him to be a mathematician when he grows up but the interesting is (which you can see through out the story, that there is a “roll changing” thing between the characters) because Reuven inthe end wants to be a Rabbi not a mathematician.
Daniel (Danny) Saunders: is a Hasidic Jew, who is also a teenager. Brilliant; with a photographic memory, and interested in psychology (particularlyFreudian psychoanalysis) but lacking in aptitude for mathematics. He wants to become a psychologist, but he feels trapped by the Hasidic tradition which forces him into the role as next in line tosucceed his father as Rabbi. (But being a Rabbi was what he was supposed to do instead of being a psychologist.)

Between them develops a deep and truthful friendship and it is very nice to see how theyhelp each other out to become what they want to become and not what they are supposed to.
