Brief History of Denmark

In the 10th century, Denmark was unified in one reign. Since then, it has being an independent country, one of the oldest inEurope. The population evolved from a society of fishers and hunters into one of farmers. The country was Christianized by Saint Ansgar and Harald Blaatand.From 1157 to 1187 King Valdimar I ruled and great improvements were made to Danish society. When King Valdimar II ruled Denmark, invaded and took overcountries by the Baltic Sea. In 1397 Denmark gained a lot of power being the ruler of the United Empire, obviously contituited by Denmark itself, Sweden,Norway, and countries ruled by them. From 1559 to 1588 was the War of the Three Kings, a war with Sweden, and two others in 1613 to 1615, and 1643 to 1645. Aperiod of peace is found between 1720 to 1807, until England attacked and forced Denmark to make an alliance with France, that led to Denmark’s involvement inthe Napoleon’s War. In 1849 a constitution was implemented by King Frederick VII. In 1915 Denmark remained neutral during World War I, the constitution waschanged to make it more democratic and women were granted the right to vote. Denmark suffered severely during 1930s; unemployment soared and the governmentcreated public works to reduce it. In 1939 Denmark remained neutral to World War II. In 1944 Iceland became an independent republic. Margrethe II becamequeen in 1972 and Denmark joins the EU.
