Bullfighting
Bullfighting is a traditional spectacle of Spain, Portugal, southern France and some Latin American countries (Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador), in which one ormore bulls are used as a bait for sport and entertainment.
Now, what is the controversial about this? Why is there such a strong polemic about this topic? According to many, there are two ways ofseeing it: as a slaughter or as an art.
The traditional fight from Spain is to have three bullfighters (also called Matadors) in the ring at the same time, fighting against a total of six bulls. Each oneof the bulls is at least 4 years old, weighting at least 600 pounds. The goal is to stab him in the heart with a sharp knife. If he misses, he can stab him in the spinal cord. In this explanation, thebrutality shown is notorious, because by stabbing him in the heart it is obvious that their goal is not only to make the bull suffer, but to kill him. And this is not a fast, painless death, it isone of the longest and suffering deaths ever practiced. It is also said that it is a blood sport, because of the bulls' extreme suffering.
On the other hand, the majority of the bullfighting opponentsdon't even know what this is about, and many haven't even presenced one of the spectacles. Also, they sometimes exaggerate in the cruelty of the Matadors, for example saying that the torture lasts formore than an hour, when the spectacle lasts no more than 20 minutes. Plus, bullfighting is also a culturally important tradition and a very developed form of art.
The unbearable truth is that, inspite of all the effort people can do to defend the animal rights and to stop this brutality, it is very hard that bullfighting will be banned, because it has become a custom for many people in theworld, and we're in an age in which no matter the change is good or bad, it has become very difficult for people to achieve the change because they get used to things and are, many times, uncapable of...
