Cell Phones Health Risk Studies
Cell phones have distorted and changed the way we communicate over the past four decades. The benefits that technology can provide us are obvious and even more in the global business sector where it is notably increasing each year. As cell phones become a central part of the daily lives of about 5 billion global users (“National Cancer Institute Fact Sheet”),there are many discussions of the potential risks that cellphones can have on humans. The most harmful thing about cellphones is the electromagnetic radiation emitted by these devices. What mostly concerns us is about what happened in 1970 with magnetic fields from power lines that started to cause leukemia in children. Similar to this issue is the electromagnetic radiation exposed by cell phonesthat are linked to brain tumors and damage of the nervous system of humans.
The energy waves that are emitted by cellphones are called radiofrequencies and are of various types. We have non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation and Ionizing electromagnetic radiation. These types of radiations are the ones that contain x-rays, radon and cosmic rays that have been proven to increase the risk of cancer. However, the relationship between these types of radiation and cancer has not been adequately proven. These radio frequencies are emitted within certain ranges, which could possibly impact neural activity. Some scientists argue that there are various possible ways in which electromagnetic fields could influence in neural activity and believe that these radiations are the ones connected to thecreation of cancer cells. However, other scientists disagree and claim that radiofrequencies do not initiate the creation of cancer cells through any way of radiation, but that they could have an indirect effect on stimulating tumors.
On the first case study, research made by scientists a few years ago were the first to put the base that created interest of the idea that electromagnetic fields ofvarying frequencies might have negative effects on neural activity. The main purpose of this research was to identify how the length and exposure to these magnetic fields would affect brain activity. The research that was funded by the NIH (National Institutes of Health) created some problems between the researchers and their funding regarding the direction the research was taking (“Paulson”). Theresearch that was made had a lot of reliability comparing it between other researchers interested in the connection between radio frequencies and brain activity. However, agents from the cell phone industry tried to discredit the researchers result. An article discussed the external conflict that was being made by the cell phone industry. Researchers spoke of the temporary problems that theyencountered and over the direction the research was taking. They specifically explained that the NIH had received notice the research was proceeding in a direction not well defined. However once they had a chance to explain what research methods they were using the NIH allowed them for their research to be further funded. The way the NIH works is that they award application processes, chooses applicantsbased on peer recommendations, then presents grants to applicants whose research is deemed scientifically valuable in the eyes of the peer review board (“Peer Review Process”). The funding for these types of research seems to provide the researcher with a very good amount of freedom allowing the method of the scientists to proceed without any major problems. Therefore, the results of theresearchers can be evaluated without fear of meeting assumptions corrupted by political intentions. The researchers kept on studying the relations between exposures to continuous or pulsed magnetic fields that would break DNA strands in brain cells of laboratory rats. They exposed the rats to both forms of magnetic fields for a brief of amount of time. Four hours after the exposure, the scientists...
