RHODE ISLAND
Rhode Island was the 13th state of the United States. Rhode Island was formed by colonist, Native Americans, and slaves. Rhode Island which is achannel of islands has an exciting story. I’ll be telling you about my state Rhode Island.
It all started with Roger Williams when he founded Providence but then he founded the Narragansett people whenthey welcomed him. He was killed by the Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritans in 1636 because of his religion but he went to Rhode Island to have religious freedom. Rhode Island became the 13th state inMay 29 1790. Rhode Island was the first of the 13 original colonies to declare independence from British rule, declaring itself on May 4 1776, two months before any other state in the whole U.S. and theconvention. The state was also the last to ratify the United States Constitution.
Rhode Island’s capitol is Providence with a population of 178,042 with the two biggest cities are Warwick with thepopulation of 82,672 and Cranston 80,387.
Newport Vineyards-is a family owned winery founded in1978 by Paul and John Nunes whose local roots date back to 1917. Rough Point-was the Newport home ofDoris Duke-Heiress art collector, and Newport preservationist. Built by the Vanderbilt family in 1887. Woonsocket-the Blackstone River makes several lazy bends as it curves through downtown Woonsocketon it’s way Worcester to Narragansett Bay. Woonsocket falls was on the maps by the early 1800’s as a crossroads along Boston to Hartford highway and because of the Worceste to Providence Blackstonecanal, by 1850 the area was busy with factories, mostly textile mills, which employed French –speaker from Quebec. A wonderful walking tour of the Blackstone Valley Heritage corridor takes history buffsthrough these historic factory communities, back and forth across the Blackstone River.
