Scientific note. Stereotactic Neurosurgery by Dr. Alberto Ochoa Govin.

Colombia, August2009 .- Stereotaxy that comes from (Latin: stereo, three-dimensional, taxis, positioning) is a modern technique of neurosurgery that allows for accurate location and intra-cranial structures through justa small hole in the skull.

Proceed as follows: a stereotaxic frame is attached externally to the patient's head, then perform a CT scan or MRI to the patient, with the reference placed in theframework, based on the image of the examination, we conducted calculations with or without the help of the computer, determining the precise location of any region of the patient's brain, translated bystereotaxic coordinates, we take the patient to the operating room under local anesthetic, make a small incision in the scalp (3cm) open a hole in the skull (1 cm), and introduce a surgicalinstrument, usually a needle biopsy or puncture, guided accurately to reach the lesion, according to stereotaxic coordinates, to achieve the target, then perform a procedure , which can be a biopsy of braininjury, such as tumors, inflammation or degenerative processes, the same for the drainage of blood clots, cysts, abscesses, or other brain injuries, then we completed the surgery, we removed the needleand close the small incision with single points. The patient usually returns to his room then, and were discharged the next day.
