CLASSIFICATION OF SOUNDS

There areseveral organs that act in the phonation process. In base of this parameter It is possible to clasify the sound depending on five phonetic criteria: by the presence or absence of obstacles, by the places ofarticulation, by the mmaner of articulation, by the action of the vocal cords and the action of the soft palate.

By the presence or absence of obstacles.

In the air flow there could be possibletwo situations:
· That the aire could find obstacles during its flow, in this case it is produced a vowel sound.
· That the aire could not find obstacles during its flow, int this case it isproduced a consonant sound.

By the places of articulation
The place of articulation of a sound is a place of the vocal cavity where the organs act in order to this kind of sound could be produced.
Theplace of articulation permit to classify the vowel sounds into three:
· Prior vowels or palatal vowels.
· Central Vowels
· Posterior vowels o velar vowels

In the same way the place ofarticulation permits to classify the sounds in diferent Consonant sounds

· Labiodentals.- The sound is produced when the upper lip havecontact with the upper teeth.
· Dentals.- The sound is produced when the apex of the tongue have contact with the upper teeth and lower teeth.
