Essay – Love in the time of Cholera
In the book “Love in the time of Cholera”, written by the Nobel Prize author called Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the protagonist known as Florentino Ariza is portrayedas a passionate man who is extremely obsessed with a young girl called Fermina Daza who belongs to the high class society. Marquez employs a detailed description of Florentino´s fervent obsession andthe way in he plans to woo her.
In this essay, the style of writing that Garcia-Marquez employs for narrating the actions in which Florentino´s obsession is reflected will be highlighted and thecontextual aspects that he includes.

The author exposes a set of hints for demonstrating the emotions of Florentino caused by Fermina. Florentino loves Fermina Daza since the first time that he sawher. Consequently, he writes a letter every day as he observes her in her way to school: pg 56, “From seven o´clock in the morning, he sat on the most hidden bench in the little park, pretending to reada book of verse in the shade of almonds trees, until he saw the impossible maiden walk by in her blue-striped uniform.” The writer describes with precise details every action, every aspect so thatthe reader can visualize and understand the magnitude of the protagonist feelings.
Marquez includes the social status in the Colombian society and the way in which it obstructs the relationshipbetween people. Florentino is a guy who works in a Postal Agency by sorting letters. While Fermina is the daughter of a wealthy man called Lorenzo Daza and she studies in a exclusive institute: pg 56, “theschool had accepted only those students with great family name”. As a result, though Florentino desires to meet Fermina and give her his letters, the social difference impede him in his intention:pg57, “he tried to make the acquaintance of some of the other students at Presentation Academy, but they were too distant from his world”.
