The aim of this work was to promote a participatory
action process within a group of adolescents, to
characterize the circumstances at the individual andgroup level which lead them to consume alcohol. The
study was divided in three stages: 1) knowledge of
the community, 2) participative diagnosis, based on
two axes: why and for what purpose the adolescents
consume alcohol, and 3) the participatory action
research. In addition, the following techniques
were used: a) graphical exhibitions, b) discussions,
c) group work with question guides: what doI
know?, what do I believe?, what have I lived?
We observed that the age of beginning alcohol
consumption diminishes (average age, 13 years old).
Alcohol consumption is mainly done on weekends,
holidays, during their free time, mainly out of the
familiar scope, in the street and meeting places;
always in peers’ company, and with an excessive
incorporation of girls. They drink compulsively,
toobtain the drunkenness effects quickly. They
generally consume beer and commercialized mixed
beverages, there are enormous availability and
diffusion of alcoholic drinks, easy acquisition and
low prices, and alcohol is mixed with drugs (cocaine
and marijuana). In conclusion it is possible to say
that adolescents display their own pattern of alcohol
consumption, which plays an important role in leisureactivities and social relationships.

El objetivo del trabajo fue promover un proceso
de investigación acción participativa en un grupo de
adolescentes para caracterizar las circunstancias,
a nivel individual y grupal, que los lleva a consumir
alcohol. El estudio se dividió en tres etapas:1)
conocimiento de la comunidad, 2) diagnóstico
participativo, basado en dos ejes: el por qué y
para qué toman alcohol los adolescentes, y 3)
la investigación acción participativa. Además se
utilizaron las siguientes técnicas: a) de exposiciones
gráficas; b) de discusiones, c) y trabajo grupal con
guías de preguntas: ¿qué conozco?, ¿qué creo?,
¿qué he vivido? Los resultados mostraron que el
iniciodel consumo de alcohol es temprano (13 años
promedio). El consumo se lleva a cabo sobretodo en
los fines de semana, días festivos, durante su tiempo
libre, mayormente fuera del ámbito familiar, en la
calle y lugares de reunión; siempre en compañía de
iguales y con incorporación excesiva de muchachas.
Además beben compulsivamente, buscando
obtener rápidamente los efectos embriagantes.
Generalmenteconsumen cerveza y bebidas
combinadas comercializadas, existe una enorme
disponibilidad y difusión de bebidas alcohólicas,
son de fácil adquisición y bajo precio, y se combina
alcohol con drogas (cocaína y marihuana). En
conclusión se puede decir que los adolescentes
presentan un patrón propio de consumo de alcohol,
jugando un papel importante como articulador del
ocio y las relaciones sociales....
