SUMMARY:
When we think about the hippies the first image that comes to our mind is usually that
of a dirty hairy man wearing psychedelic clothes and smoking cannabis all day. But it is
obviously more than that. It is not the person but what he or she does. The hippie
movementappeared as a response to the Vietnam War when people started to think that
war wasn’t a solution for anything. They imagined a better world where we could all
live in peace. They were open-minded people who wanted to free their souls from the
cage in which their body had turned. In a dull and strict society they decided to break
the rules and change everything that was already established.Times changed, music
changed and the mind of the people changed. That they took drugs is undeniable, but do
we really know and understand why they did it? It is more complicated than that. We
can’t just say they were all drug addicts who didn’t know what to do with their time and
kept wandering like animals who slept when tired, ate when hungry and had sex
whenever they wanted with whoeverthey wanted because hippies considered sex
something natural and a way to express themselves.
San Francisco became a very important capital of the counterculture in the United States
where they rejected the conventional the social norms established during de 50´s.
With the new times new genres of psychedelic rock music appeared and with it bands
like The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, JeffersonAirplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors,
Cream, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Janis Joplin.

New drugs appeared and they wanted desperately to have new and fascinating
experiences so the LSD was highly popular among the hippie communities.
Hippies were peaceful but at the same time revolutionary because they wanted the
society to change. All they were saying was “give peace achance”1

RESUMEN:
Cuando pensamos en los hippies, la primera imagen que se nos pasa por la mente es
habitualmente la de un hombre sucio y con greñas vestido con ropa psicodélica y
fumando cannabis todo el día. Pero es obviamente más que eso. No se trata únicamente
de las personas sino también de lo que hacen.
El movimiento hippie surge como respuesta a la guerra de Vietnam cuando la gentecomienza a pensar que la guerra no es solución a ninguno de sus problemas. Ellos
imaginaban un mundo mejor donde todos pudieran vivir en paz. Eran personas abiertas
de mente que buscaban liberar sus almas de la jaula en la que sus cuerpos se habían
convertido. En una sociedad aburrida y estricta decidieron romper las normas y cambiar
todo lo que se había establecido previamente.
Los tiemposcambiaron, la música cambió y la mente de las personas cambió. Que
consumían drogas es innegable, pero ¿realmente entendemos por que lo hacían? Es más
complicado que todo eso y no podemos limitarnos a decir que eran drogadictos que no
sabían que hacer con su tiempo y se dedicaban a vagabundear como animales que
dormían cuando estaban cuando estaban cansados, comían cuando tenían hambre y
teníansexo cuando y con quien querían ya que los hippies consideraban el sexo algo
natural además de un medio para expresarse.
San Francisco se convirtió en una importante sede de la contracultura en los Estados
Unidos donde rechazaban las normas establecidas durante la década de los 50.
