Google is a company with deep competitor foresight. It has along history of outmaneuvering both its current and future competitors. As a future- orientated innovator google is always looking around the corner for what is next for its users, whether it is a new way to access the world of information via google glass (afuturistic-looking pair of internet-enabled glasses) or a novel means of accessing the web via weather balloon, as is the case in a remote part of new zeland.
The company has managed to keep one step ahead to potential competitors through a combination of long-range internally generated innovations and smart acquisitions designed to plug holes in its use offering. Google has purchased more than 100companies in the past 10 years with the goal of ensuring it continues to be the preferred search company. When it saw competitors such as jumptap growing rapidly in the mobile advertising space, it purchased admob, a platform for mobile advertising. As customer usage has shifted from computers to mobile devices, google has moved quickly to positions itself in emerging search and advertisingmarkets. It has developed the android mobile operating system and purchased motorola mobility. When google saw competitors moving into the local search markets, it purchased zagat to bring more value to users by providing restaurant reviews as part of its local search results. Google is constantly monitory the technology environment, looking for opportunities to add capability to its current offeringsand keep ahead of future competition. Its latest acquisition of a free global positioning system (gps) application called waze was a move designed to keep its lead as the preferred mapping and mobile device navigation provided after apple launched apple maps in 2012. Waze differs from traditional gps navigation software, as it is a community- driven application that learns from users´driving timesto provide routing and real time traffic updates. Additionally, people can report accidents, traffic jam, speed cameras or traps, and any number of things other would find useful. Google outbid competitors Microsoft and yahoo to purchase youtube, which now generated more than 4 billion in revenue, according to morgan Stanley estimates. This move also made it difficult for future competitors toenter the video space.
Google could see the future of the web evolving to increasingly include more and more video. So far it has been proved right. As of 2013 more than 100 hours of video are uploaded every minute. Google also saw apple as a future competitor with its domination of the early smartphone market. As a result of this shift to mobile devices google developed the android operating system, and as of july 2013 it is the leading mobile platform in terms of users worldwide.
Google culture of innovation and willingness to both develop and purchase new innovations has kept it ahead of potential competitors.
This is a capability built into the google culture. People in that organization are curious, always on the lookout for what is next. They are creating new services internally andalways looking externally at what other companies are doing that will fit with the company´s portfolio
