RESUMEN La mortalidad neonatal es un índice del nivel de desarrollo de los pueblos y de la calidad de atención tanto prenatal como del recién nacido. Los predictoresprincipales de muerte neonatal son la edad gestacional y el bajo peso al nacer. La población de nacidos vivos fue de 6476 y la muestra es de 122 neonatos muertos. Se realiza el estudio de la mortalidad neonatal, edad materna, control prenatal, edad gestacional, peso al nacer y causa de la muerte. La tasa de mortalidad neonatal total fue de 18,83% o, la inmediata de 3,39% o, la precoz de 15,44% o y latardía de 3,39% o. Un 27, 86% de las madres tenían entre 15 a 19 años y 20 a 24 años; y el 45,90% no se controló el embarazo. Un 86,07% de los productos eran pretérminos. Un peso inferior a 2500 gramos en el 83,60% y a 1500 gramos en el 47,54%. Se utiliza el multidiagnóstico para establecer causas de muerte, 43,44% respiratorias, 40,98% por sepsis 22,95% por asfixia, 20,49% por inmadurez y 16,39%por malformaciones. Los recién nacidos con peso inferior a 1500 gramos servirán para considerar los limites de viabilidad, los índices de mortalidad neonatal son inversamente proporcional a la edad gestacional. Se concluye que el problema respiratorio por prematuridad constituye la primera causa de mortalidad neonatal; es necesario fomentar el control prenatal, dotar las áreas de atención neonatalcon equipos médicos especializados y mejorar el registro interno de morbimortalidad.
