DISCAPACIDAD INTELECTUAL
El retraso mental o discapacidad intelectual significa que el funcionamiento intelectual es menor de lo normal con limitaciones delfuncionamiento adaptativo. El retraso mental se presenta en personas de todas las razas y etnicidades y es el trastorno más frecuente del desarrollo, ya que afecta a aproximadamente un 1% de la población general. Las personas con retraso mental obtienen una puntuación baja en las pruebas de inteligencia (cociente intelectual [CI]), pero los efectos sobre el funcionamiento de la vida diaria dependende su gravedad y de los deterioros asociados. Los niños con retraso leve (alrededor de un 85% de los que presentan retraso mental) suelen aprender a hablar y llegan a ser independientes para cuidar de sí mismos, a pesar de que su ritmo de desarrollo es más lento de lo normal. El DSM-IV-TR subclasifica la gravedad del retraso mental basándose en puntuaciones de CI (Tabla 1)
