Brent Staples

For me this article began with a bit of humor, or irony. He begins by calling the incident his first victim. This articles is well written, which leads me tothink that this man is well educated. I could tell that this was going to be interesting from the very beginning.

The fact that this man has to even come up with tactics to make people morecomfortable on a day to day basis makes me sad. He seems to see it as just something he has to do. He writes about whistling popular classical tunes to ease the tension. He says that this not only allowspeople to not be so uptight around him, but sometimes they respond with their own whistle version of the tune. This to people around him serves as a peaceful proposition, as to say; “I mean you noharm.” It makes me sad that this is something that he not only sees as acceptable, but has gotten into a routine of. This should not have to be a routine for someone just because of the color of theirskin.

Brent Staples seems to take this all so well. He accepts the things he has to do as part of life. When it first started happening in his early twenties he was shocked but now sees it asnot that bad. He discusses a man of his same ethnicity and situation who didn’t fare quite as well as him. When mentioning this story it seems like he is saying it could be worse. IT could in factbe worse, but this shouldn’t be everyday behavior that someone has to learn. He is a victim because of the color of his skin.

Even though this man accepts his everyday challenges as a part of hislife, it shouldn’t be something that happens this way, and this frequently. Perhaps it is because we are taught to fear “certain people” that makes him appear scary to a lot of people. Racialprofiling is a problem just as bad as stereotyping is a problem. It may only be noticeable when it comes to the law system, but that isn’t the only place that it happens. Every day, everyone employs...
