Skateboard
Many people believe that skateboarders are criminals, but as an individual sport it helps to develop concentration skills, balance and body coordination. Since it began in the 1960 it has been and remains one of the most popular sports in the world, over time the skate has expanded everywhere and it has come to Guatemala.
Skateboarding started as “sidewalk surfing”, people wouldmake a flat board and would slide down the sidewalk with them. This was a national fad, the issue was called “yet another California Craze.”
Skateboarding was invented by Alan “Ollie” Gelfand who was born in New York but moved to Florida when he was 4 years old. He started to dabble in the skateboard at age 11 after his father bought his first skateboard. The sport began to take popularity in 1977.The origin of the ollie was the result of a creative and an imperfect skateboarder skatepark. From there they got the name “Ollie” from his name. The “Ollie” is a fundamental basis for harder tricks. To put it in more simple terms, it means whenever you jump with the skateboard. You do this without using hands so that you can jump over things, jump in the air to do tricks, and jump on grind rails. All you really need is yourself and a skateboard. Technically, you don't even need shoes!
Skateboarding is a very popular recreational sport. There are twenty million people who practice skateboard around the world. There are over three-hundred manufacturers of skateboards and equipment for professional levels. Some of these companies are alien workshop, antihero, birdhouse, blind, and zero. Those are the most popular skateboard companies in US. Here in Guatemala there is a company that produces typical designs of our country in the skateboards.

There are a lot of different ways to skate. For instance, you can free skating, street skating, vert skating, and many more. A lot of people skate at skate parks; there are 800 private and public skate parks in the US.

People alwaysthink that they are going to get injured or hurt when they are skateboarding. That is not true, studies show that skateboarders are less likely to get hurt playing traditional sports like baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and football.
The feeling of riding your board down a hill or over transition at the park can't be beaten. The feeling of landing a new trick is a huge rush. The feelingof weightlessness, of fading into pure motion, pushing yourself and ONLY yourself ... this is all easily the largest reason for skateboarding's popularity. Yeah skateboarding will hurt, but all things worthwhile involve some level of risk of and pain.
Skateboarding is freedom and self expression. Skaters out there know, and if you haven't skated, you should try. There's nothing like it.

Inthe words of Alan Gelfand ...
"Do not be a follower, be a leader"
