Scale: Conceptual and contextual mediation strategies for the intervention of a modern movement heritage site.
Incorporating urban equipment on the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas.
Anyarchitectural project is characterized by a diversity of solutions, depending on the actions and operations of design structure for the scope of any formal results. The intervention as a transforming project onformer architectural elements is not an exception in this condition.
When these transforming actions are raised for a heritage modern architecture site, the project is governed by a few canonswhich aim to protect the exceptional nature of it without omitting the needs that emerge in everyday use; these works, such as recent constructions, are fully operational. Even so, the heritage object isvulnerable to the criteria and interpretative decisions of each designer.
Establishing modern heritage sites intervention strategies should take into account two main considerations. In the firstplace, that heritage from the modern movement in architecture is currently occupied, and responses should be formulated based on the emerging needs of everyday use. Secondly, notion of scale shouldbe applied to the intervention project recognizing two levels of action: as a key conceptual mediation between the new and the pre-existing, and as a physical limit for the transformation.
It isintended to present this chapter of an ongoing research which aims to study the role of the architect on the development of strategies for the intervention of existing architecture, particularly atthis stage, when the interest is to understand the negotiating processes in the integration of new architectural elements in a modern heritage site using the concept of minimum intervention scale, andthe ideas of integration of the arts and industrial design as a synthesis, formalized by the same Carlos Raul Villanueva during the times of the modern movement.
