Drug Abuse
The word drug refers to any substance or product that affects the way peoplefeel,think, see, taste, smell, hear, or behave. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines drugs as, “any substance, solid, liquid or gas that changes the function orstructure of the body in someway”.A drug can be from a medicine, such as morphine, used by patients to an industrial product, such as glue, used by children in the streets. When you put them into your body, often by swallowing,inhaling, or injecting them, drugs find their way into your bloodstream and are transported to parts of your body, such as your brain. In the brain, drugs may intensify or dull your senses, alter your senseof alertness, and sometimes decrease physical pain.
Drugs are commonly classified according to their legal status or their effects on the central nervous system.Some drugs are legally available,such as approved medicines and cigarettes, while others are illegal, such as heroin and cocaine. In legal drugs, laws and regulations control the availability, quality and price of the legal drugs. Forexample, tobacco may not be sold to persons under the age of 18.
