The Functions of the Holy Spirit in the argument of the Epistle to the Romans Jamal Franklyn The functions of the Holy Spirit are a repeated theme throughout the Epistle to the Romans. This is best described by the repeated usage of the expression ¨by the Holy Spirit or through the Holy Spirit¨ within the epistle. (Romans 2:29, 5:5, 8:11, 12, 15:13, 16, 30.) The author manages this expression notexplaining, but assuming the functions of the Holy Spirit in different aspects of the arguments presented in his epistle, like the Proclamation of the Gospel, Sanctification and Justification. This expression is used also within the epistle to describe Jesus´ function while he was here on earth, to bring to us ¨ salvation, reconciliation, justification, righteousness and sanctification. ¨ (Romans5:11, 16, 17, 6: 22.) The fact is, that this expression applied to Jesus and the Holy Spirit respectively describing their functions, implies that the epistle affirms that the Holy Spirit functions as part of the Godhead. There is no epistle that defends the importance of the functions of the Holy Spirit as part of the Trinity as does the Epistle to the Romans.

How does the Holy Spiritfunction as part of the Godhead? The Apostle Paul in Chapter 1 verses 4 and 9, describes the Holy Spirit as exercising the function of empowerment to be holy and power for the preaching of the gospel to the world. In Chapter 5 verse 5, the Holy Spirit is responsible for bringing out the results of justification within us by ¨pouring out within our hearts the love of God.¨

This paves a way for theHoly Spirit to continue his function of sanctifying the believers of God. Firstly, the Holy Spirit sets them free from sin, Romans 8:2 says that the ¨Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. ¨ The freedom brought by the Holy Spirit leads secondly, to sanctification as Romans 6: 22 explains that ¨but now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, youderive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome eternal life.¨ So the Holy Spirit functions by freeing us from sin and then sanctifies us just as Romans 15:16 reminds us that the Holy Spirit Sanctifies. The Holy Spirit as agent of sanctification reveals more of his functions. According to Romans 7:6, He brings ¨a newness of life that compels us to serve.¨ The Apostle Paul writes thatHe even ¨dwells in us¨ in Romans 8:11, and ¨makes us children of God¨ in Romans 8:14. Then the ¨Holy Spirit himself testifies that we are children of God¨ in Romans 8:16, while simultaneously furnishing evidence to our minds that we are ¨adopted into the family of God¨ in Romans 8: 15, 23. All functions of the Holy Spirit.

One can conclude that the Holy Spirit functions not only as agent butalso as the path or the process to sanctification himself. This is clearly seen in Romans 8:4 where we are invited ¨to walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.¨ Another function of the Holy Spirit is found in the expression ¨according to the Spirit¨ in the preceding verse 5, ¨those who are according to the Spirit, set their minds on the things of the Spirit.¨ The Holy Spiritfunctions as a way of life, a Godly lifestyle model that leads us to sanctification. There are those who live after the flesh or after the Spirit, ¨and the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace¨ Romans 8:6.

Additionally, the Holy Spirit functions as a Life Giver, making ¨us alive because of righteousness and by dwelling in us.¨ Romans 8:10-11. In order, to be made alive by the Holy Spirit, onemust die to the flesh. And here we have the help of the Holy Spirit to do this because he also functions as a Flesh Killer. Paul writes that it is ¨by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, and you will live.¨ Romans 8:13. Now, the Life Giver and the Flesh Killer also functions as a Leader, ¨for all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.¨ Romans 8:14....
