SUMMARY
The story centers on Penelope Wain who believes her lover, NeilMacrae, has been killed by enemy fire shortly after being placed under court martial. Macrae's commanding officer was Penelope's father who gave some orders in combat that ledto disastrous results.
Everyone thinks Neil is dead; Neil was part of the battalion that was bombarded to pieces. Colonel Wain had Neil captured by military police forsupposedly not obeying orders in 1915. Then after a bombardment, all trace of Neil was gone. That he died apparently in disgrace does not alter her love for him, even though herfather is insistent on his guilt. (However, he was picked up, badly wounded and amnesiac, and sent to the hospital). In the two years Macrae was away Penelope has gained respectas a talented ship designer. And she has received a proposal of marriage from another soldier who served in the war in her father's squadron.
What Neither Penelope or herfather knows is that Neil is not dead, but has returned to Halifax to clear his name. He looks for someone else in his battalion who could be called on as a witness to reallywhat happened. He does not tell Penelope he is back. One day, Penelope is daydreaming on a bus and catches a glimpse of Neil. This sets into motion a chain of events. Asupporting character is Major Angus Murray, an old 40 something man who is a suitor to Penelope, but ends up aiding Neil. The big explosion neatly ties up a lot of loose ends.
