Social networking advantages and disadvantages
Nowadays almost everybody has passed to form a part of the social networking site called Facebook. From six year old kids to Senior citizens, almosteverybody has become part of this social group. But exactly how beneficial can this be to society? Does having a Facebook account benefits society in any way? Or does it causes more damage than good?If we focus on the impact social networking has on education, there is more disadvantages than advantages. According to an article from the University of the Pacific, students often get sanctioned bytheir school’s administration because of inappropriate content found on their Facebook pages that violates the school code of conduct. Also, according to journalist Jolie O'Dell, Students whoconstantly checked their Facebook profiles during school or during homework time, have on average 20% lower grades than students who do not try to multitask and combine social networking with school.Students can also be led to unreliable sources when researching for school work, by giving too much credibility to articles published in Facebook pages that are often unreliable. This causes grades to bejeopardized.
The use of social networking often gives chance to cyberbullies to harass their victims in a totally new way, the internet. Threats, offensive statements, mocks, and other forms ofharassment are now easier to apply, especially if the bully protects himself using an anonymous Facebook profile.
However, besides all these inconveniences that emerge by using social networking, thereare also several advantages that can be found. According to Jolie O’Dell, students find social networking very useful when communicating with teachers and students outside the classroom. Also,students these days find themselves more comfortable working with online resources when doing schoolwork.
