THE PEOPLE’S QUEEN
The English government is a constitutional monarchy, meaning that the monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, acts as head of the state within the parameters of a constitution. The power ofthe monarchy has been slowly decreasing since the Magna Carta was published, although, nowadays, The Queen still undertakes constitutional and representational duties which have developed over onethousand years of history. The following text aims to explain the tension between the two powers of England, the Queen and the Government, based on the film “The Queen” which reflects accurately thisconflict.
The film is set during the week after Princess Diana’s death in 1997, when Queen Elizabeth II was caught between a very critical media and the desire to protect the royal family. The death of“the people’s princess” left lots of grieving fans desperate to find someone to blame; at first they focused their anger on the paparazzi and the media, and later on the newspapers shifted the attentiononto the Queen due to her cold attitude towards Diana’s death.
At times of national celebration or tragedy the Queen is expected to represent the nation’s mood, for example, at annual commemorationof the war dead on Remembrance Sunday, or at celebrations for a national sporting victory. But this did not happen when Diana died, and the public was speculating whether there were personal reasonsinvolved. According to the Queen it is not that she did not care- it is that she is practicing politics the way it’s always been done. If times are changing shouldn’t tradition change with it?
Theextract of the dialog that we are going to focus on is a conversation between the Queen and her assistant, when she is about to meet the Prime Minister (to be) Tony Blair.
