Interview with a Manager
Being a healthcare manager is a lot harder than it may seem. Some people become healthcare managers because of the compassion they have towards patients. Other people might fall into this position without acknowledging the challenges it faces. In the next few paragraphs I will explain briefly what Marie Lopez’s life is as a healthcare manager.
Both of Marie’s parentswere teachers, and from a young age she knew she wanted to be one too. Once she had graduated high school, she was immediately enrolled in an education program as well as in a computer analysis program. During her undergraduate years she met and married Dr. Philippe Lopez. After their marriage they both decided to immigrate to the United States from France.
Once they had established themselves inthe United States, her husband Philippe studied a lot in order to accomplish his five different medical board certifications. Meanwhile, Maria was raising their daughters. Dr. Lopez got hired at Clear Creek Medical Group PC in Denver, in where he soon learned that an I.T person was needed. At this point in her time it had never crossed Marie’s mind to not only work with her husband, but to do so inthe medical field. Marie accepted the position, and a few years later Dr. Lopez felt that it was better for his family to open up their own clinic. Before he could do this he knew he would need a trustworthy manager. He encouraged and convinced Marie to go back to school and get a Master’s Degree in Health Care Management; which she did.
Soon after graduating the University of Colorado, her newchallenged started. She only had three months to find the perfect location for the practice Colorado Pulmonary Diseases PC, set up all of its I.T systems, decorate the office, hire the appropriate staff, and make all the necessary purchases with a small budget. Without anyone’s help and knowledge, Marie managed it all without any problem.
At the time, Marie was in charge of 4 employees whoincluded a receptionist, one Physician Assistant, and two Medical Assistants. Since then, the office had grown dramatically and Marie was no longer able to manage many people, due to the fact that she was also a mom who needed to take care of her own children. Dr. Lopez decided to partner up with another Pulmonologist who would have to bring their own staff to the office. Marie was once again incharge of interviewing and hiring the correct people to work in the practice. Now-a-days Marie is in charge of 15 people of whom 3 are Supervisors and have to report to Marie.
Even though she does not have to deal with the employees directly, she is still in charge of a lot of tasks, such as processing the payroll every two weeks, hiring, training, and evaluating employees, paying all of the officebills, building the providers’ schedules in the office and hospital, reviewing medical charts for errors and attending conferences offered by the Rose Medical Group for Health Care Managers.
She recently had to fire a receptionist due to misbehavior, and then immediately she posted position-availability ads in major newspapers and websites. Even after analyzing received resumes and interviewingthe best candidates, Marie did not find the appropriate one, she then turns to hiring companies who will (for a fee) search for and send her the correct candidate. She knows that these types of companies might be expensive, but sometimes they are necessary to resolve the problem right away.
Marie works around 60 works a week without any overtime paid due to getting paid a flat salary. A lot oftimes the job is not done at work but instead at home, due to Dr. Lopez always asking for answers at home, therefore Marie has managed to maintain part of her job at work and part at her office at home.
Marie gets paid $4000 gross per month; and for the fact that Dr. Lopez is her husband she believes she is being underpaid, even though she is not really sure what the fair amount is for a Health...
