MFA of paper

The following material flow analysis of paper was realized in one apartment when lives only one student since two months ago. TheMFA takes in consideration different materials related with paper (as paperboard) and each use of them. Table 1 shows all the flows for the system, with has as physical boundaries the walls and the doorof the apartment. I defined that boundaries because is useful to calculate the use of paper in a home.

The methodology used for the calculation use as unit a sheet of 8.5” x 11” sheet of paperwith a usual thickness (Reference Bond 16). If some material or sheet of paper is thicker than this usual measure, it was counted as the equivalent in the used units. For example, a 3 times thick papersheet was counted as 3 units. With this, the calculation had a weighting depending of the type of thickness and material.

MFA includes any kind of paper, as bond, paperboard, food labels (sometimeswith plastic), paper towels, napkins, toilet paper and others listed in table 1. Also, is important to see the economic impact of materials, their biodegradability and their versatility.

We cansee that the stock in the house is 4772 units (U), which is not really high. It is due to the time spending in the home (only 9 weeks). Inputs are very similar to outputs, when input is 1469.4 U andoutput is 1885.7 U (Figure 1).
