College Essays
The college process is long. There are SAT’s and ACT’s, talks to coaches, deans, or professors in some cases, campus tours, information sessions, and teacher recommendations to thinkabout, all while working to maintain a solid GPA (grade point average) in the classroom. That said, there is one part of the college search that is considered by many to be the most demanding part ofthe common application: the essay. Although the questions have not changed in years, these five questions are open-ended enough to give you any number of ways to express to your schools of choice whythey should pick you. This, however, is far from an easy task. Here are a few tips that can help you move towards an essay that you can submit with confidence:
* Start early:
* As statedbefore, the questions for the Common application have changed very little over the years, so try to get started on them at least during the summer before graduation. This will help make your last yearless stressful as you are already way ahead of the game when school begins.
* Don’t go with your first idea:
* Try writing at least two prompts for each question. This will get you in themood for writing and it will help solidify which topic you can most artfully construct. After this, take your top choice from each topic and write an outline. Ideas might seem solid in your head, butonce you try to truly flush out these ideas, some will be more difficult than others.
* Edit, revise, rinse, repeat…a lot:
* You are not writing this paper to turn into your English teacherso you can receive a grade; you are writing this paper so you can choose where you want to live for the next four years of your life.
