James Baldwin was an outstanding novelist and playwright born on August 2, 1924 in Harlem. He dreamed in becoming a well knowledgeable writer. James couldn’t become who he wanted to bebecause he continually battled the illogicality of racism that made his life miserable do to the color of his skin. (Baldwin 30) He determined to not let hatred ruin his life as it did to his father.James felt denial and revenge for America society he was full of repugnant characteristics, he was homosexual, black, small, frail and ugly. The exile of James to France was when he met RichardWright, one of the greatest black writers in the world. After that his life completely change he became an illustrious intellectual circle in post war of France. Later on in 1957 he became involve with thecivil rights movement. (Baldwin 30)
As everything continues in, James can personally identify and comes out discovering his true identity. One of the first things he says is, “I left Americabecause I doubted my ability to survive the fury of the color problem here. I wanted to prevent myself from becoming… merely a Negro writer.”(Baldwin 31) Baldwin thinks he hates America. I think that he isinstead blinded by the constant discrimination he faced growing up in 1950’s New York. During all those years he just listened, and he was never taught how to deal with it all. When he realizes thatputting distance between him and the country he hates is a good idea, then he has started the road to recovery. At this point he is about to undergo a big psychological change, not only Baldwin wentthrough that many people out there have those similar problems. They hate there country once they migrate they discover that adaption was what made them feel like that. Baldwin couldn’t take the growingracial tensions in 1950’s. (Baldwin 31) In Paris is where he felt free and clear of what he really was, he could express himself better with a title that would tell what identified him.
