Activity Name: Oral Blending and Segmenting
Activity Form: Game
Target grade: K
Group size: Small Group, Whole class
Length: 5 minutes
Materials: Bag with objectsor pictures of objects such as chalk, ball, hat, glove, pencil, etc
Goal: Given multiple letter sounds, the student can blend them into a word
Items: Chalk, ball, hat,glove, pencil, etc.
Language-Based Skill: Phonetic Awareness, Phonetic distinction
Directions: Collect a set of small objects from around the classroom into a bag.
1. Askthe children: “Would you like to play a game?", Here is how you play: pull an object from this bag but don't let anyone else see it. You stretch out its name and everyoneelse has to guess the object.
2. My turn first. I pulled out a glove, for example. I Kept it hidden. I said "My object is a gllluuuvvv. "I hold each sound for at leasta second. What is it? That's right, glove! Gllluuuvvv: glove. Now it's your turn. Pass the bag to whoever guessed first. You may need to help them segment their object.Start by just giving them the first sound and see if they can do the rest. If not, segment for them.
3. You can also have students play this game in small groups or evenpairs. One student collects three objects from around the classroom, segments their name and the other student(s) blend. Then they switch roles.
4. If students find thistoo hard, you can start with onset and rime instead of the segmenting the whole word, so glll-ove, b-all, etc.
