Resumen
En Venezuela, la Extensión junto con la Investigación y la Docencia son las tres funciones principales de las Universidades, tal como se
contempla en la Ley de Universidades (1970) y en los Reglamentos Universitarios. Sin embargo, mientras la Docencia y la Investigación han
sido las prima donnas, la Extensión ha sido la cenicienta. Poco se le considera a la hora de la distribucióndel presupuesto universitario y menos
aún al diseñar el currículo.
Afortunadamente, en los últimos años, este problema viene siendo tratado en la comunidad universitaria en distintos tipos de reuniones y
eventos, entre los cuales destacan las reuniones de los Núcleos de Directores de Cultura y Extensión de las universidades venezolanas; los
Congresos Nacionales, Latinoamericanos y losIberoamericanos de Extensión Universitaria, a fin de encontrar soluciones para subsanarlo.
Durante estos eventos se ha tratado el papel de la Extensión Universitaria no sólo en la formación de los estudiantes sino también en el papel
que desempeña para el cumplimiento de la función social de las instituciones de Educación Superior. Asimismo, se ha debatido sobre su
inserción en el currículo, suacreditación, su pertinencia y sobre las medidas a tomar para destacar su importancia entre las funciones universitarias.
Este trabajo recoge esas experiencias para tratar de organizar un marco teórico en torno a la Extensión Universitaria desde las definiciones
y sus alcances, la fundamentación legal, su ubicación en la estructura académica y en el currículo, los tipos y modalidades hasta laslimitaciones
y las propuestas que denotan la visión prospectiva de la Extensión.

Abstract
UNIVERSITY EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN VENEZUELA
In Venezuela, Extra-Curricular Activities, along with research and teaching are three of the main functions of the Universities, as indicated by the
University Regulations(1970). However, while Teaching and Research have been the prima donnas, the Extra-Curricular Activities have been “Cinderella”.
These activities are hardly even considered within the University budget and even less so in the drawing-up of the curriculum.
Fortunately, in the last few years, this problem is being treated in the University community in different types of meetings and events. Amongthese
meetings, those of the Cultural and Extra-CurricularActivities Board of Directors of the Venezuelan Universities, along with those of the National and Latin
American (including Spain) Extra-Curricular Activities summits stand out. During these events, the role of the Universities’ Extra-Curricular Activities has
been discussed, not just regarding the education of the students but also takinginto account the role that Higher Educational Institutions play regarding
the accomplishment of its social function. Likewise, the insertions into the curriculum of the Universities’ Extra-Curricular Activities, its sponsorship,
appropriateness and the measures to take in order to highlight its importance among University affairs have been debated.
This research compiles these experiences inorder to organise a theoretical framework concerning the Universities’ Extra-Curricular Activities from the
definitions and their reach, their legal basis, their position within the academic structure and curriculum, their types and methods to the limits and
proposals denoted by the prospective vision of the Extra-Curricular Activities.
