French Canadian Culture

French Canadians live in an important part of Canada. Their culture is very special. Montreal is the center of French Canadian Culture.

• Languages: Canada is acountry with two official languages, English and French. Some of the most common French Canadian expressions are very similar to those of France:
“Bonjour”-Hello“Joyeux Noël”- Merry Christmas
“Bonne Chance”-Good Luck “Félicitations”-Congratulations
• Food: It is influenced by French cuisine and alsoIrish and British cuisine. Acadians love cheese and wine. Some meals prepared for special religious holidays and celebrations are Tourtière (pork and spice pie), poutine (French fries covered withgravy and cheese curds), Pâté Chinois (similar to a meat pie with corn and potatoes), and sugar pies.
• Religion: The Catholicism is a very important aspect of the French Canadian Culture. Mostof the French Canadians are Roman Catholics.
• Weddings: Marriage is a traditional celebration. The boyfriend asks the father for the hand of his girlfriend in marriage. The enterrement de la viede garçon is a party in honor of the boyfriend. The sock dance is a part of French Canadian weddings. The wedding invitations are printed in French and English. Honeymoons are at a relative’s home.After marriage, women wear dresses in dark colors and men wear a moustache, a gold watch and a chain.
