Haiti is an island in the Caribbean. People in Haiti are very poor, their houses aren’t made with the same materials as ours. It is the poorest country in the WesternHemisphere. From the Enriquillo Lake in Dominican Republic there is a failure that goes through the west part of Haiti and finishes in Jamaica; this is known as the Enriquillo Failure. Since 1992 manygeologists have been announcing that there is a high probability of an earthquake in the Caribbean and that is because of the Enrriquillo Failure. They have been thinking that there could be a very strongmovement in this failure. People in the Caribbean didn’t prepare, thinking that an earthquake could never happen.
An Earthquake is a movement of the earth's crust, which originates naturally at orbelow the surface. In January 12th, 2010 the capital of Haiti, Puerto Principe, suffered an earthquake. People in Haiti weren’t prepared for this kind of natural disaster. The earthquake had a categoryof 7.0, it was a couple of seconds but the catastrophes that it made were horrible. Approximately 316,000 persons were dead and other 350,000 had injuries. There are a lot of people that are stillbelow the rest of the buildings. A year after the earthquake the people of Haiti and the international help try to fix the damages but it is too difficult.
To begging with, one of the effects that theearthquake caused is the missing shelters. Because of the earthquake 1,5 million people are without a home and they have to live in improvised camps. Not only houses but hospitals, buildings,stations, schools and jails were destroyed. There is no personal to clean and pick up the rest of the buildings. Also there are no constructors to rebuild everything that was destroyed. The Haitian governmenthasn’t organized correctly and they don’t have a reconstruction plan.
