THE CANANCOL
Tell me, Mr. Nico, why do you put that figure with that stone in his hand in the centre of your corn field?.. i asked to the old man.
In his face a littlesmile apeeard, like a child smile, and he asked me: i know that you dont belive, but i tell you: im poor, very poor, and i dont have anybody who can help me to take care of this corn field, cause when we finish wit the plantation, somebody steals me all the corn: This figure, wich is not a common figure, is something else, when the nights fall out, he put stronger, and walks in all the field, he ismy serveant, his name is Canacol, and its part of me, cause he got my blood, he only obeys me, cause im his master.
Mr. Nico continued, after we burn the corn we put two lines wich go to the centre, we put the corn in orientation to Lakin, and the entrance goes in that direction, finished with that, wich always has to be done by a sorcerer, we put all the wax form nine bees group, as much to coverthe Canacol, and it has to got the size of the corn, after we make the figure, we put the eyes, wich are two beans, his theets are corn and also his nails. The Canacol will be seated above nine woods piles: Everytime that the sorcerer put all that things to the figure, he will call to the four winds, and pray to be good with me, and he also pray cause this is the only thing to feed my childs. Wenthe ritual is finished, the figure covered with very special plants is introduced to the gods, and to the sun, and it given to the god of rain, we burn plants with smells and we keep the holy fire, for an hour, meanwhile, the sorcerer gives to the people balche, wich is a liquor very strong, just for the humans not notice of the come of the gods to the earth. This its a thing that just the humanssee.
The ritual has to make it wen the sun its in the middle of the sky, and with a very hard voice, he saids: today starts your life, and this pointing to the owner, he is your lord, obey Canacol, obey, the gods will punish you if you not obey, this corn is yours, you shoul punish tho the thieves, here is your weapon, and he puts a stone in the hand of the figure.
While the burnt, the grown ofthe corn, the Canacol, is coverd with plants, but when the corn starts to have form, he discovers… and as the poor people says… that the thieves who try to steal it, receive deadly stone hits. Thats because wen there are Canacoles int hte fields, nobody steals anythyng.
So strong as this belived, that in that time, the place is hurted by any animal, the guilt is the Canacol.
When the owner goesto the field, he takes his cautions, and before he goes in, he whistles tree times, is the signal, very slowly he aproaches to the figure, and he takes the stone of the hand of the Canacol, and when he goes out, he whistles again. When the night goes in, the Canacol goes trough the corn field, and some people say that he wisthles as a deer.
After, when we grain all the corn, we make a Hanicol,in the honor of the Canacol, and when the ceremony is finished, we melt the figure and we use the wax to make candles, wich we burn in a temple, in the presence of god.
And then the old man, after he talked a lot, he shout out as a prefect beliver.
