Addicted to texting
Emma Singer is having lunch with a friend. Her phone vibrates by her fork. She calmly picks it up midsentence reads the message, taps in a response never missing a beat of the ongoing face-to-face conversation with her friend. Then a few minutes later her friend’s phone buzzes. She blushes into the screen, giggles discreetly, and responds. Neither minds the interruptions. These teen are skilled at having multiple conversations at the same time. Emma admits her dependence on her cell phone ‘’ I can’t imagine life without it. I mean, I could live without my computer or my TV. But not my cell phone! How would my friends reach me? Emma is among the 75% of teens in the Us who own cell phones. Texting is the number one way teens communicate with friends today. It is morepopular than face-to-face contact, email, IM, and voice calling. According to recent surveys, 50% of American teens send 50 or more messages a day. One in three teens sends more than 100 texts a day. It’s no wonder then that 42% can text with their eyes closed!
Why the texting craze? Emma explains, ‘’texting lets me always be available to my friends. That’s so important ‘’ with teens today it’sthe act of staying in touch that matters not the content of the communication. Teens prefer texting to voice calling because it’s private and accessible practically everywhere ‘’ I can respond wherever I am whatever I’m doing’’ emma admits. ‘’ with a voice call, my parents or my teacher might hear what I’m saying’’ in japan, teen cell phone use is even higher than in the US: 96% of 16 to17-year-old own their own cell phones. Seventeen –year-old kumiko azuma is the ultimate texter. She’s able to text while studying, talking on another phone, watching TV , doing chores, shopping, exercising , showcring sometimes a combination of several of these.
‘’ I’ ve even texted while sleeping!’’ she admits. Kalikow must be addicted if her entire existence revolves around this little media tool!At the root of teen cell phone addictions worldwide are none other than parent. in both the US and japan, most teens have unlimited phone access that is paid for by parents. In brazil, 56% of teens ages 15 to 19 pay for their cell phone use out of their own pockets, compared to 27%_ in the US if teens are forced to foot the bill and track their usage , they may use their phones moreresponsibly . Parents could also activate restriction options on phones, limiting who their kids communicate with, when, and how much. One US mother comments, ‘’I just want my daughter to understand that she can’t be available to her friends all day every day. It’s unhealthy. Sometime needs to be set aside for homework or her family. She can’t be tapping mindless text messages all day ‘’
In the end, parents and teens should be able to reach a compromise. After all, cell phones offer many benefits: safety, easy contact, and GPS tracking (though teenagers may not be happy that their parents can track where they are at all time). Teens can also get organized on their cell phones with calendars and to-do lists. They can set reminders for assignments and activities. With internet accessibility onmany ‘’smart’’ phones, the possibilities will soon be endless. Smart phones might eventually replace personal computers. The key now is to help Emma, kumiko, and teens around the world reap the benefits of cell phones, including texting, yet not become so dependent on them they can’t eat a meal uninterrupted or sleep peacefully through the night.
