THE ISLAND
It is one of the most isolated islands in the world but 1200 years ago a double-hulled canoe filled with seafarers from a distant culture landed upon its shores. Over thecenturies that followed a remarkable society developed in isolation on the island. la de Pascua, Rapa Nui, Te-Pito-Henúa o El ombligo del mundo, se ubica en el Océano Pacífico y es la más alejada delterritorio continental.
THE MOAIS
The large stone statues, or moai, for which Easter Island is world-famous, were carved from 1100–1680. The moais were made by volcanic stone in the volcano of RanuRaraku.
For reasons still unknown they began carving giant statues out of volcanic rock. These monuments, known, as "moai" are some of the most incredible ancient relics ever discovered. The people ofEaster Island called themselves the Rapa Nui. Where did they come from and why did they disappear? Science has learned much about the enigma of Easter Island and has put to rest some of the morebizarre theories, but questions and controversies remain.

Little is known about the cultural context of these figures although they are generally considered to berepresentations of ancestors. It is believed these figures were worn hanging around the neck of the men who took part in the ritual dances during public ceremonies.
