How to prevent cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular disease, or CVD, is one of the mayor causes of deaths in the world. CVD is the name given to a variety of different diseases that affect theheart or any blood vessel, such as strokes, heart attacks, atherosclerosis and high blood pressure.
Here are some steps in order to avoid CVD:
• Give up smoking
Smoking is one of the mayor riskfactors for developing CVD. This is so because nicotine narrows your blood vessels, making the heart to work faster in pumping blood. In this way, as the heart will beat faster, heart rate is increased. Inaddition, some of the oxygen in your blood will be replaced by carbon monoxide, leading to high blood pressure, due to the fact that the heart will work harder so as to supply enough oxygen.
Also,more than 4,800 chemicals are present in the tobacco smoke, and the majority are quite dangerous, as they can damage your heart and blood vessels, developing atherosclerosis (tapering the arteries, sothat flow of blood to the heart is restricted).
Some researches conducted show that smoke is the cause of around 17% of CVD deaths in women and 20% in men.
• Be more active
It is recommended totake regular exercise (mainly aerobic, even though other intense physical activity is good as well) for at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week. It burns calories, so it helps to control yourweight, as well as reducing your possibilities of high cholesterol, stress, high blood pressure and diabetes, conditions that may lead to CVD. Also, it increases the amount of HDL (‘good cholesterol’)so that the level of LDL (‘bad cholesterol’) is decreased.
• Keep on a healthy weight
As you get older, when your weight is increased, is rather fat than muscle what is being gained.Overweight people are more likely are more likely to develop high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, increasing the chances of CVD.
