If employees undervalue costs of benefits, why should a company not drop benefits and simply add more direct compensation?
Introduction
Benefits in kind have a crucial role in the remuneration employees receive in change of their job, some ofthem are valued more than others but this is because a reason and companies should be aware of this.
Benefits are part of wages whether they are in kind or cash that an employee receive on retribution for his job, these benefits are in addition of the normal wages or salaries that the employee earns and are not mandatory, therefore they are not always present in the payments because itdepends on decisions and politics of the different companies and sometimes agreements between employees and employers.
This benefits can be present in different ways and can be of different sorts e.g. housing, retirement benefits, vacations, social security, take-home vehicles, hotel stays, paid leisure activities, etc. The value and acceptance of these benefits as well as the impact on themotivation and performance of the employees and the convenience for the employer depends on different factors and can vary between people, jobs, positions in the company, personalities, different needs of the people, preferences, etc.
The aim of this paper is to show how and why the acceptance of benefits as part of the wages vary and explain whether it is better to give benefits or not.
To see howa person value or undervalue the different benefits of a company it is necessary to understand what is the impact of these benefits in the satisfaction and motivation and how these benefits stimulates and encourage the employees, so in that order of ideas, first of all it is necessary to understand what is motivation how it influence the performance of the workers and what is the factors that canmotivates the staff.
Motivation
During the years there has appeared a different amount of theories and studies which have different approaches in regards of what stimulates and motivates an employee in the work place, some of these theories give a better understanding of why and how and employee value or undervalue the benefits and the direct compensation.
